7 things to do in Richmond this Victoria Day long weekend

The Royal Canadian Circus is back at Lansdowne Centre.

Spot prawn season is officially open and the circus is back in town, all in time for the long weekend. A slightly rainy weekend is in the forecast according to Weatherhood, so make sure to bring an umbrella along to the following events:

1. Enjoy a family-friendly performance at the Royal Canadian Circus

The red and yellow tents are up and running at the Lansdowne Centre parking lot, which can only mean one thing - the circus is back in town. From May 16 to 20, community members can enjoy performances by an aerialist, contortionist and motorcycle stunts at the Royal Canadian Circus. Tickets are available online and in person, use the code "FUN" online for a two-for-one deal.

2. Support local vendors at an art market

Community members will get to enjoy local wines and shop local artisans at the Vines Art Market at the Lulu Island Winery this weekend. Admission is free.

3. Go for a swim at the Steveston Outdoor Pool

One of Richmond's two outdoor pools is reopening for the summer months this weekend. Starting Saturday, community members can once again enjoy the Steveston Outdoor Pool. For more information about opening times, click here.

4. Support local musicians at the BC Chinese Orchestra's annual concert at Gateway Theatre

The BC Chinese Orchestra is celebrating its 29th anniversary with a concert on Saturday. The theme of this year's concert is "heroes" and will feature a selection of traditional and modern pieces including the renowned General's Command often featured in Hong Kong films and television series and a suite of six complete movements from the 1959 Chinese dance drama Dagger Society.

The concert will also feature soprano Miao Quanting from the Vancouver Chinese Choir, a group from the Vancouver Chorale and young musicians from the BC Youth Chinese Orchestra.

5. Shop local at the Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market

The second Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market of the year is being held on Sunday. The market will be held twice a month from May 5 to Sept. 15. All money raised support activities and projects at the Steveston Community Centre.

6. Enjoy live music over a glass of wine

Country Vines Winery is offering a series of live music days on its outdoor patio starting on the May long weekend. From tonight until the end of October, community members are invited to enjoy wine, charcuterie and treats from the food truck while listening to performances by local musicians every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Seating is first come, first serve.

7. Check out a Chinese painting and calligraphy exhibition

For those looking for something to do on weekdays, Lipont Gallery on No. 3 Road is currently showcasing the work of artist Jiangang Su at a free Chinese painting and calligraphy exhibition. The theme of the exhibition is See the Mountain, based on the theme of scholars admiring stones. Su is a Vancouver-based artist known for his gongbi-style paintings, versatile styles of calligraphy and seal carving.

Date and Time: now through June 6, 2024 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, except Tuesdays when the gallery is open until 8 p.m.)
