A Richmond temple is holding a series of celebratory events to commemorate the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha and Mother's Day next month.

On May 11 and 12, Lingyen Mountain Temple is inviting community members to take part in its celebration titled "The Mind of Buddha and the Mind of a Compassionate Mother."

To express their gratitude to the Buddha, participants can take turns bathing the Buddha with fragrant water on May 12 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The ceremony will include solemn rituals to welcome the statue of the baby prince as well as offerings of incense and flowers.

Also on Sunday is the Lingyen Charity Bazaar, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and feature booths offering a diverse selection of vegetarian food, handcrafted products and other activities.

Proceeds will be donated to BC Women's Health Foundation, Richmond Hospital and Chimo to focus on addressing challenges faced by women in the community.

Throughout the weekend, community members can also check out a calligraphy exhibition titled "The Wisdom of the Diamond Sutra."

The exhibition will focus on artwork by famous calligraphers focused on the Diamond Sutra, and live calligraphy demonstrations, Chinese zither performances of Buddhist music and traditional Chinese tea ceremonies will be available.
