Young Richmond boxer crowned national champion

16-year-old Julian Angelakis won all of his matches at the nationals last weekend.

A boxing prodigy from Richmond recently took home the title of national champion after sweeping the competition.

Julian Angelakis, 16, represented Team BC in the 54 kg weight class at the 2024 Canadian Junior and Youth National Championships, which took place in Calgary from March 20 to 24.

Angelakis won against Team Alberta's Jamie Monaghan and Team Ontario's Brennan Mackay by unanimous decisions and secured his title as national champion following a "tough fight" against Team Quebec's Alexis Turbide in a split decision of 3-2.

Angelakis, who also goes by the nickname "Kid Wolverine," told the Richmond News he felt good about representing Team BC and winning nationals.

"I put the hard work behind it to be where I'm at today," he said, adding he was grateful for support from his dad and his boxing team.

"In the future, I'm ready to represent Team Canada in the boxing ring against all the top boxers in the world."
