Richmond native Breanne Watson has been appointed to the newly-created position of Associate Director, Athletics at Simon Fraser University.
The former NCAA Division I basketball student-athlete and professional player will will provide leadership to SFU’s NCAA Division II varsity program, overseeing more than 30 full and part-time coaches, and managing responsibility for day to day operations, including budgets, event management, and team travel.
“Breanne will be a welcome addition to our Athletics and Recreation management team in helping us achieve our common goal of realizing our potential and elevating our performance in all that we do,” said SFU Senior Director of Athletics and Recreation Theresa Hanson. “She brings high energy, passion and is a proven leader who is well-suited to provide strong leadership for our 17 varsity sports and 400+ student-athletes”.
Watson has a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Washington, where she was a three-year starter and a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic Honourable Mention for the Huskies. Following her student-athlete career, the McMath graduate went on to have a successful pro career in Europe. Watson joins SFU from Fortius Sport and Health where she managed business development for the integrated and multifaceted athlete development centre.
“Simon Fraser has all the tools necessary to become a perennial power not only in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, but in all of Division II. Having been a NCAA athlete, as well holding a strong understanding of the Canadian university system, I am very excited for the opportunity to leverage my experience and work alongside Theresa Hanson, Simon Fraser coaches and department staff,” said Watson.
She will start her new position next Monday.
