Two Richmond performers are starring in a “re-imagined” production of Jason Robert Brown’s “Songs for a New World” playing Downtown now until Saturday, April 1.
Katie McColl and Regi Nevada, who is a teacher at St. Joseph’s the Worker in Richmond, form part of the 15-strong cast, which is billed as taking audience members on a journey to new worlds including Syria, Afghanistan, the North Pole, the Philippines, a Shaughnessy mansion, colonial America, the Bronx and the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
The performance, which is being produced by newcomer Fabulist Theatre and directed by Damon Jang, is reportedly a “rare kind of show” with a song cycle somewhere “between a musical” and “a revue” that explores themes of immigration, war, motherhood, poverty and the “singular moments that transform our lives.”
Fabulist Theatre said it’s “committed to producing shows that promote diversity in all forms and creating opportunities for a wide variety of performers, both amateur and professional.”
The producers will be donating partial profits to the UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency in Canada) as well as donating tickets to new immigrants.
Songs for a New World runs now to April 1 at the PAL Studio Theatre, 581 Cardero St., Coal Harbour, Vancouver.
Tickets are $28 (general admission) and $24 (students/seniors). The March 29 performance is admitted on a “Pay-What-You-Can” basis.
Evening shows are at 8 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinees on Sunday, March 26 and April 1. More information available online at FabSongs.bpt.me.
