Helicopter rescue for hiker injured on Juan de Fuca trail

Three Juan de Fuca trail hikers who got lost north of Bear Beach also called for help on Saturday.

A hiker who sustained a back injury on the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail was airlifted to safety on Saturday, says Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue.

The search-and-rescue team said Port Renfrew’s volunteer fire department helped with the rescue, near Botanical Beach at the north end of the trail, and that helicopter assistance was required due to trail conditions.

Three other Juan de Fuca trail hikers who got lost north of Bear Beach also called for help on Saturday afternoon.

Another team was able to locate and lead the hikers to a command post to warm up and dry off.

Bear Beach is about nine kilometres from the trail’s southern terminus.

“These hikers did the right thing once they found themselves in a precarious position by staying in place and calling for help,” the search-and-rescue team said.
