A woman camping in her vehicle near Cumberland had a frightening experience Tuesday night when a man stopped and struck her windshield with an axe.

The suspect caused “significant damage” to the woman’s vehicle, said Comox Valley RCMP.

Police said at around 10 p.m., the woman was camping along Comox Lake Road, between Cumberland and Comox Lake, when an unknown car pulled in front of her vehicle.

The man got out of his car with an axe, struck the woman’s windshield, got back into his car and sped off toward Comox Lake, police said.

The suspect is described as 5-foot-7 or 5-foot-8 with a medium build, wearing a white baseball hat with no visible logo and a white bandana just below his eyes covering his face.

His vehicle was a four-door, medium-sized, dark-colour sedan with no front licence plate, police said.

Police said several vehicles and campers have been parked in the same area along Comox Lake Road, and they’re asking any witnesses or individuals who have had a similar experience to contact the Comox Valley RCMP detachment at 250-338-1321.
