Free Richmond program teaches parents ‘Nobody’s Perfect’

Dealing with picky eaters and temper tantrums are things all parents go through, and the Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV) is hosting its parenting program online to help them create a support network during the difficult times.

Nobody’s Perfect is a free, six-week program where the primary caregivers of a child can connect with other moms and dads to discuss their problems and work through them together.

Bilquis Amarshi-Hirani, a facilitator with FSGV, said the program, like its name, is to remind parents that “nobody is perfect.”

“Parents often feel stressed that they might not be doing the right thing or doing something wrong or are guilty of something… This program is to help find a solution for them by creating a support network,” said Amarshi-Hirani, adding that the program is “basically parent-run.”

“I’m a facilitator, but the parents are the ones with all the knowledge, ideas and solutions that can help each other out.”

The program aims to help child caregivers with children ages zero to five and is open to anyone in a parenting role such as a grandparent or an aunt.

While the program will be hosted virtually on Zoom for the first time, Amarshi-Hirani believes there won’t be much change from previous in-person sessions.

“The premise of the program won’t change because we are building a support network and discussing issues that parents have,” said Amarshi-Hirani.

“Parents always developed their code of conduct, respect and confidentiality during the past programs, and I hope it will be the same during virtual sessions.

“It’s just a very welcoming and embracing time for parents with different needs to come together.”

Nobody’s Perfect will run every Monday from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Sept. 14 to Oct. 19.
