Update: Crash south of tunnel claims life of motorcyclist

BC Highway Patrol is asking for witnesses with dash-cam footage or a vehicle description.

A motorcyclist has passed away after an early morning crash just south of the George Massey Tunnel.

BC Highway Patrol received a call at 6:15 a.m. of a "serious collision" on Highway 99 in the northbound lanes in Delta.

According to BC Highway Patrol, a motorcyclist ran into a car, fell onto the roadway and was critically injured by the rear wheels of a semi-truck.

BC Highway Patrol wants to speak with the driver of the semi-truck who didn't remain on scene and may not know what happened, said Melissa Jongema, media relations officer for BC Highway Patrol.

They are also appealing for witnesses, including the driver or company related to the semi-truck, who may have a vehicle description, licence plate or dashcam footage of the collision or pre-collision.

Anyone with information should contact BC Highway Patrol at 604-526-9744 and refer to file 2024-932.

Traffic was snarled at the tunnel heading into Richmond as only the HOV and counterflow lanes were open. Drivers were told to expect "major delays."

As of noon Wednesday, the lanes were still closed.
