After four long months of renovations, Steveston Seafood House has reopened just in time for the annual Spot Prawn Festival.
The fire that engulfed Super Grocer affected the local restaurant in late January.
Shane Dagan, owner of Steveston Seafood House, said the fire caused "a lot of damage." The grocery store’s structure had fallen onto the restaurant and separated a section of the building.
There was also smoke and water damage.
“It was a huge mess and quite a bit of work to get back to opening the restaurant,” said Dagan.
The Steveston Seafood House was founded in 1977 by Rolf Jung and the building it calls home was erected in 1940.
Dagan worked at the restaurant for 24 years since 1998 before becoming the owner 17 years ago.
“We couldn’t have timed it better for the festival,” said Dagan.
“For our last couple of weeks, we really hustled to make sure we made the spot prawn season.”
Tourism Richmond and Steveston Harbour Authority are hosting its annual Steveston Spot Prawn and Seafood Celebration from now until June 16 with 12 local restaurants partnering in a dine-about event.
A family-friendly Spot Prawn Day event is also taking place on June 8 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Steveston Village where aspiring seafood chefs can learn tricks and tips from chefs at a culinary stage.
