A man serving a second-degree murder sentence has died in a B.C. prison.

Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) announced the death on July 16 saying the person died while in custody at Abbotsford's Regional Treatment Centre, also known as Pacific Institution.

Eugene Raymond Benoit, 69, died of apparent natural causes on July 13, a news release said.

"At the time of death, the inmate had been serving an indeterminate sentence, which commenced on Feb. 23, 1987, for second-degree murder,” says Tracey Cochrane, assistant warden.

CSC is reviewing the death and will notify the police and coroner.
