Letters: Geese cull in Richmond park may ruffle a few feathers

A Richmond News reader loves the city's renovated Minoru Lakes park, but not so much its local residents

Dear Editor,

Re: “Richmond's Minoru Lakes Park re-opens,” Richmond-News.com, June 9.

I was excited to walk around the updated Minoru Lakes Park when it reopened last week after it was closed for so long for renovations.

They cleaned up the lake and waterfall, built new walkways, new benches, new bridges, and even adding a small island with a stone path leading to it.

Overall, the City did a great job in improving the park which is an important green space in the heart of our city and next door to our hospital for staff and patients to enjoy.

However, what is unfortunate is that the geese have already taken over! You can't sit on the grass and relax because it’s covered in goose poop. The pathways are covered in goose poop.

There is poop all over our park and it is preventing people from truly enjoying it - and us taxpayers just paid $3 million towards these renovations.

Recently, the Vancouver Park Board, faced with a similar situation in Stanley Park, announced their intention to cull their problem geese.

I recognize that just mentioning the word "cull" can ruffle some people's feathers, but this is a gem of a park and the taxpaying public deserves for it to be clean so it can be fully enjoyed.
