Vancouver Forecast: Short term rain followed by return to sunny days

Monday won't be setting the tone for the week

The rain is coming to Vancouver.

Monday will be rainy and grey, but it'll be followed by several summery days, according to the Vancouver forecast.

While Sunday, Aug. 25, saw a mix of sun and cloud throughout the day, Environment Canada meteorologist Gary Dickinson says a short term system is arriving soon.

"We're going to be seeing a Pacific frontal system that's going to approach the Metro Vancouver area sometime on Monday afternoon," Dickinson tells V.I.A.

The system won't be as strong as the weekend rain on Saturday, but it'll still drop a notable amount of rain for late August.

Dickinson expects Vancouver and Richmond areas to see 10 to 15 mm of rain, while North Vancouver and rainier areas will see up to 30 mm of precipitation over a period of about 12 to 18 hours starting Monday afternoon.

That'll keep temperatures a little cooler than average (which sits at 21 C), with a high around 19 C and an overnight low of 12 C.

"That front will move out of the area overnight before Tuesday morning," Dickinson adds.

The rainy system will quickly be followed by a ridge of high pressure that should build in strength through the rest of the week.

That means a return to stable, sunny skies and rising temperatures.

"As the ridge of high pressure continues to strengthen temperatures will continue to rise Friday and Saturday," he says.

Starting Tuesday temperatures should rise each day; on Aug. 27 a high of 19 C is predicted, and by Saturday, Aug. 31 a high of 24 is forecast.

"This ridge of high pressure isn't as strong as the one we had in July," says Dickinson. "So it'll only be slightly above seasonal averages. But it's going to still be a pleasant stretch."
