A Canadian charity is asking for donations of lightly-used technology, so that refugee children new to Canada can participate in this year’s summer camp – which has gone online due to COVID-19.
BC Newcomer Camp is asking for donations of tablets or computers so that families who can’t afford or don’t have access to those devices can participate.
The organization has been offering free summer camps to support refugee children as they transition to their new lives in Canada for the past five years.
“As we adapt to the new normal in B.C. our goal has not changed, and we need British Columbians’ support as we transition to online camps,” said Duncan Bernardo, co-founder of BC Newcomer Camp.
“By donating lightly-used tablets, computers or a monetary gift, you are ensuring that a child is able to participate in a life-changing program this summer from the safety of their homes.”
Since 2016, BC Newcomer Camp has helped over 200 refugee children through its free camps with curriculums including English language training, sports and nutrition education and community-building with peers.
Second-hand devices will be picked up at the curbside by staff members from June 13 to 16.
