With Vancouver International Airport situated in Richmond, we are the city with the most ideal plane-watching spots. Whether it be within the city, or a quick drive out closer to the airport, there are plenty of options to catch that plane taking off or landing.
Flight Path Park
This outdoor park is in the Sea Island area of Richmond right on Russ Baker Way. This park has a clear view of YVR’s runway. Situated in the middle of the park is a miniature version of an airport runway, paper airplane benches, a half-dome globe, and information on the city’s aviation history. Best of all, it's free and open all day.
West Dyke Trail / Terra Nova
A great place to take a walk and plane watch is the north end of the West Dyke Trail, which leads into Terra Nova. There are benches for people to sit and take a break while waiting for planes to land or take off from YVR airport, which is across the Fraser River.
Iona Beach Regional Park/Causeway
Located on the north and west side of YVR airport, this is one of the best spots to plane watch while enjoying a walk when the sun sets. There is a 4-kilometer jetty that stretches out above the water and is considered an easy walk. This plane-watching spot is gated and only open between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.
South Terminal Viewing Platform
This outdoor plane spotting platform is adjacent to the South Terminal building on Cowley Crescent in Richmond. There is free limited parking for those visiting this spot and it is also accessible by public transit. This viewing platform is open 24 hours.
Public observation area at YVR
If you’re inside the airport, there is a free plane viewing spot before security. YVR’s public observation area is in the domestic food court on level four. It faces the west side of the airfield with telescopes and information panels for everyone to use. Unfortunately, there are no runway views from this location, but it is open all day for the public to see some general loading and unloading of parked aircraft.
