If you celebrated Halloween on the weekend, it’s highly likely you’ve got one or two “expertly” carved pumpkins just about starting to mature on your deck, doorstep or balcony.

Rather than just bagging them and throwing them in the trash, however, why not consider a few, relatively hassle-free alternatives.

1. Eat it

Yes, that is right. Pumpkins are packed with all kinds of nutrition. You can cook bake the pulp into a pie, make curried soup and/or keep the seeds for a snack. There are lots of recipe ideas online.

2. Compost it

Chop it up and mix it with your yard trimmings for your backyard compost, so you can grow even bigger pumpkins next year!

3. Kick it to the green cart

Last, but not least, the City of Richmond has an excellent Green Cart program. Just wrap your used pumpkins in newspaper and dump them in your green bin for the next collection.
