An annual Richmond Hospital Foundation gala has raised more than $1.3 million to support a new mental health campaign at Richmond Hospital.

The foundation's 2024 Starlight Gala on Nov. 4, presented by the Greczmiel Family, brought community leaders and philanthropists together at River Rock Theatre.

The donor community collectively raised $1,390,000 towards Richmond Hospital's Emergency Department Mental Health Campaign.

This new campaign focuses on a dedicated space within the emergency department where individuals with mental health symptoms can receive patient-centred care and assessment.

According to Vancouver Coastal Health, the new space will feature reduced external stimuli via softer lighting, soundproof walls and more privacy in addition to enhanced sightlines for nursing staff to respond to patient needs.

This new area of Richmond Hospital's emergency department is expected to open in August 2025.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our donors for their generosity in ensuring that the needs of our community are met and that health care in Richmond continues to be impactful,” said Spencer Gall, chief philanthropy officer of Richmond Hospital Foundation.

“Richmond Hospital’s Emergency Department is an important place the community relies on for urgent health care services and a well-designed environment is crucial for helping all patients feel safe and cared for during their time of need.”

During the event, Cowell and his family were also honoured with the Leadership Award for their commitment to health care in Richmond.

The Cowell family has owned and operated one of the Lower Mainland's longest, family-run auto businesses.
