Kudos: Richmond pickleball athletes raise more than $8K for charities

Two local elementary students donated more than $1,000 from selling custom pickleball items

Richmond’s pickleball players recently wrapped up a successful three-day charity fundraiser tournament series by donating a total of $8,075.60 to two charities and honouring a beloved member.

On June 18, the last day of the tournament and Father’s Day, Richmond BC Pickleball Association (RBCPA) members raised funds for the Canadian Cancer Society in honour of Kevin Wilkinson, a fellow member who recently passed away from cancer.

Highlights of the day include a fundraising booth with custom-made pickleball bags, towels and buttons created by Homma elementary’s Caitlyn Ho, 10, and McKinney elementary’s Keira Yip, 11, who raised $1,075.60 with enthusiastic support from attendees.

RBCPA donated a total of $5,075.60 to the Canadian Cancer Society, including $3,000 from tournament entry fees and another $1,000 from an RBCPA member.

A donation of $3,000 was also made to KidSport Richmond in support of local kids in need of financial assistance in pursuing sports.

The tournament series, organized by the Richmond BC Pickleball Association (RBCPA), saw more than 180 players participating in the singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles categories.

The event was held at the Hugh Boyd Park outdoor pickleball courts over three weekends from May to June.
