Local athletes raised $8,000 at the 2024 Steveston Icebreaker 8K to help make sports more accessible to Richmond kids.
Kajaks Track & Field Club and New Balance Richmond, the event sponsor, recently presented the cheque to KidSport Richmond at a local elementary track and field championship at the Minoru Clement Track.
"Having grown up in Richmond and participating in the Richmond sports system both as participant and coach, I take great pride in being able to give back to the community that gave me so much," said Jared Hulme, race director for Kajaks.
"Sport can play a huge role in one's life (as it did for me) and I would hate for someone not to have that opportunity because of financial barriers.
"KidSport has a special place in my heart and I am honoured to play a small role in helping kids across the city have an opportunity to participate in sport."
The Steveston Icebreaker 8K is one of Kajaks' major annual fundraisers and takes place along the Steveston Village boardwalk and dyke trail every January.
