This week is the last week of Mamas for Mamas and Ikea Richmond's back to school essentials donation drive.

A donation drive to support families in need ahead of the new school year will wrap up next week.

The month-long initiative at Ikea Richmond started on June 28 to collect non-Ikea and Ikea back to school essentials for Mamas for Mamas' Backpack Program, which provides school supplies to more than 1,000 children and youth.

“We are seeing an increase in mothers and caregivers in crisis," said Celena Arthur, Mamas for Mamas' director of national partnerships.

"As we are expecting over 500 families to be reaching out to Mamas for Mamas for our backpack program, we are thrilled to be partnering with IKEA Richmond and the community to bring back to school essentials to those most in need."

From now until Wednesday, July 31, community members can drop off their donations at a small wooden house at Ikea Richmond's store entrance at 3320 Jacombs Rd during store opening hours.

Suggested donations available at Ikea include backpacks, lunch bags, food containers, chargers and desks. Ikea Richmond will match donations of Ikea "back to school" items with similar products up to a maximum of $5,000 in retail value.

Other essentials needed include rulers, erasers, geometry sets, memory USB sticks and calculators.
