Memory Lane: Richmond's arts hub in the 1970s

The Richmond Arts Centre opened in 1967 and was later replaced by the building currently hosting Richmond Public Library's Brighouse branch and the Richmond Cultural Centre.

Did you ever take art lessons in a funky black-and-white building in Richmond city centre?

The Friends of the Richmond Archives recently posted a photo from 1970 of the old Richmond Arts Centre in the Minoru area.

The building opened on Oct. 3, 1967 and is located at what is now the Richmond Cultural Centre and Richmond Public Library's Brighouse branch.

It housed the art gallery and museum while providing meeting rooms and space for workshops for theatre, painting, sculpture and ceramics and the lapidary arts.

"Groups like the Historical and Museum Society, Richmond Community Theatre, Richmond Artist's Guild, Richmond-Delta Sketch Club and Richmond Gem and Mineral Club all called the centre home," reads the Facebook post.

On the right of the photo is the Hudson's Bay building, which was at the north end of the Richmond Square Shopping Centre. The sign and awning of the Simpsons Sears Automotive Centre can also be seen at the far right.

The Richmond Arts Centre was later razed to make way for the new building around 1991, and a time capsule believed to have been relocated from the old arts centre can be found in the present Brighouse library.

The time capsule, buried during Richmond's centennial in 1979, will be opened in 2079.
