More than 4,500 pounds of trash cleaned up from Richmond shorelines this weekend

Unexpected shoreline finds in annual joint clean-up.

An old truck canopy, a TV and a full car engine were among items volunteers found during a shoreline clean-up at two Richmond locations this past weekend.

More than 60 Richmond business community members and volunteers gathered on SEpt. 14 to clean up more than 4,500 pounds of trash along the Nelson Road Beach and River Road shorelines.

This is an annual event between the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, Platinum Pro-Claim Restoration and 505-Junk, aimed at protecting Richmond's coastline and keeping debris out of the waterways.

Among the debris were 1,100 pounds of metal, a burnt safe, bottles, cans, and lawn furniture.

Volunteers also cleared a large amount of styrofoam, discarded fishing "ghost" gear, and open-cell foam floats, which are some of the most harmful shoreline pollutants.

Open-cell foam floats break down into microplastics and severely contribute to ocean pollution.

Shaena Furlong, CEO of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, said the shoreline clean-up is special for them.

"It’s powerful to bring people together outside of the traditional business environment to roll up our sleeves and really make a tangible difference," said Furlong.

"Richmond is an island community. Our shorelines are precious. I’m very grateful to the many volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning to keep our shores beautiful.”

Barry Hartman, co-founder and CEO of 505-Junk, said the annual event is a reminder of "the strength of our community."

"It is one of our favourite events of the year and greatly benefits our environment," said Hartman.

"Our partnership with the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and Platinum Pro-Claim Restoration fosters a sense of shared purpose and responsibility for our environment."

Platinum Pro-Claim Restoration Director Jamie Madill said this year's shoreline clean up was rewarding despite the rainy day.

"This is our 8th annual shoreline cleanup, and every year I'm more impressed with the turnout and the impact we're making in restoring our community and the planet," said Madill.
