I recently visited the Lingyen Mountain Temple in Richmond when they were hosting a monastic life experience retreat.
As a photographer, I was interested in both the concepts and the possibilities for interesting, colourful images.
The retreat was designed to give participants a view of what it means to be a monk.
The opportunity was presented as a means of delivering the Buddha’s teachings. The retreat also allowed lay practitioners to experience monastic life and learn more about Buddhist teachings.
During their week-long time there, participants experienced the structured monastic life of reciting sutras, studying the precepts, learning about Buddhist chanting and joining in work around the monastery.
The retreat intended to refresh the participants from their secular concerns and encourage them to develop a deeper sense of Buddhist teachings.
The retreat was limited to 80 male participants and 120 female participants.
The temple, located at 10060 No. 5 Rd., has 10,000 members.
