Out and About: Beautiful temple enhances Richmond community

A welcoming temple that is open 24/7 to the public.

Guru Nanaksar Gursikh Gurdwara Temple on Westminster Highway in east Richmond is a beautiful structure both inside and out.

The temple was established in Richmond in 1979 by His Holiness Sant Baba Mihan Singh Ji.

When I visited recently, I was made to feel very welcome.

One of the temple’s unique features is the ongoing reading of the Sikh holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, which continues 24 hours daily

One of the central beliefs of the Sikh religion is to provide service to their community. There is a community dining hall that is open most of the day and free to the public.

The temple is unique among religious buildings in that it is open 24/7.

In 2019, the temple donated $1.3 million to the Richmond Hospital to support the new acute care tower.

Everyone — regardless of their beliefs — is welcome and encouraged to visit Sikh temples.

The standard requirement for visitors is to remove their shoes before entering the central place of worship and everyone must cover their heads.

The temple has a box of basic head scarves at the front door for public use. It is customary for men to sit on the right and women on the left.

The congregation numbers are in the thousands.

The temple is located at 18691 Westminster Hwy., between No. 8 and No. 9 roads.
