Very few cities in North America have the unique luxury of fresh and fresh-frozen seafood on a pedestrian-friendly dock.
The original concept began in the 1970s at a location closer to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery.
When concerns arose about the safety and practicality of this site, an alternate plan was developed under the guidance of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
The new, specially designed float opened in 1989 under the management of the Steveston Harbour Authority.
Steveston is unique in this pedestrian-friendly area with authentic seafood harvesters and direct sales.
Visitors can meet the fishers who harvest and sell the products — and see the vessels and fishing gear that bring in the catch.
Weekends bring seafood lovers and tourists from the Lower Mainland and beyond.
A wide choice of offerings is available according to the season and the catch.
Typical seafood items include jumbo shrimp, squid, octopus, crab, skate, sardine, hake, salmon and sea urchins.
The boardwalk above the dock also has a variety of restaurants and there are other food offerings nearby that cater to a wide range of tastes.
