A Richmond Grade 12 student celebrated the last day of classes in the best way possible on Friday afternoon.
Ashiera Shane Boral received the keys to a new car from Richmond's Applewood Nissan at the fourth annual grad car giveaway at H.J. Cambie secondary.
Boral, who plans to study at BCIT as a lab technician this fall, said the car will help her get to places faster without dealing with "hectic traffic and transit delays."
"It would really help a lot with my transportation because during my last year in Cambie, I actually moved to Burnaby and I had to transit all the way every day," said Boral.
"I was telling my mom that it would really benefit us with the car and she said just pray hard and work hard and be really humble with everyone to get that kind of blessing."
Last Friday, students gathered in the school's rotunda for H.J. Cambie Day, a celebration of the last day of classes where the draw for a free car from Richmond's Applewood Nissan took place.
Students who wanted to win the car had to submit a questionnaire on how the car would benefit them and their families and how it would support their goals after graduation.
Boral told the Richmond News she has her driving test booked and will get her "L" this summer and hopefully her "N" by the following year.
"I don't have my license and I didn't really expect to win the car anyways, but now I have to get it with this car," she said.
"I think this amazing donation from Applewood Nissan really helps each student be more confident in themselves and get that car."
Mugi Masaki, teacher at H.J. Cambie, said there are a little more than 100 students in this year's graduating class and more than 60 students applied for the car draw.
"For our Cambie community, this event is exciting because this all sort of began when the pandemic started and people were feeling a little down so it was nice to have something to look forward to," said Masaki.
"We've been really appreciative of this local business being so supportive and we are so grateful to be able to continue this for the fourth year."
