The majority of respondents to a poll asking about further expanding a bike/pedestrian lane on Steveston Highway felt it would be a waste of taxpayer dollars.
In a poll that ran from Dec. 31 to Jan. 7, 53 per cent didn't like their tax dollars being spent on the multi-use pathway whereas about 23 per cent said it was a "great idea" and 10 per cent said it was a good idea but too expensive.
The multi-use pathway from Railway Avenue to Shell Road, currently under construction, has a price tag of about $17 million, paid for by multiple levels of government.
The City of Richmond is planning the next phase, which would extend it to No. 5 Road, if approved by city council.
The longer-term plan is to connect it to the new tunnel being built to replace the George Massey Tunnel.
However, while some letters to the editor expressed displeasure with the bike/pedestrian pathway, many were in support.
The Richmond News polled 488 readers and asked the question: "What do you think of further expanding the Steveston Highway bike/pedestrian path?"
Of the 488 votes, we can determine that 228 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:
