Richmond army cadets meet on Thursdays at the Sherman Armoury.

Richmond army cadets are fundraising with an online auction and they hope the community will support them by bidding on possible holiday gifts.

The goal for the 2947 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps is to raise funds for activities such as band, drill, sports, marksmanship and first-aid teams.

The auction is open to the public, not just cadet families, explained Debbie Jiang who’s been coordinating the online auction.

There are 100 items to bid on including B.C. Ferries vouchers, VSO tickets, LEGO, gift cards and wine. The auction items are valued at $6,500.

The online auction began on Sunday, Dec. 1 and closes at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9.

All winning bidders will be notified and can pay by e-transfer.

The items will be ready for pickup between Dec. 10 and Dec. 13 from Jiang.

To take part in the auction, participants must create an account by clicking here.

Several local businesses have donated to the auction, including the Flying Beaver, O’Hares, Richmond Olympic Experience and the Richmond Sockeyes.

Donations to the Army Cadet League of Canada, corps number 2947 are also being accepted.

Youth can join year-round

Youth aged 12 and older can join army cadets year-round. They meet on Thursday evening from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Sherman Armoury at No. 4 Road and Alderbridge Way.

In addition to parade nights and learning lessons, army cadets also go on outings such as overnight field training exercises.

Senior cadets will have opportunities to be leaders and go on paid summer trainings.

There is no cost to join cadets and the uniforms are provided.
