The "human library" program returns to Richmond this weekend.

This free, drop-in event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. on April 13 at the Richmond Public Library's Brighouse branch, offering a space for dialogue where "human books" can be borrowed by "readers" in 20-minute slots .

The human library concept began in Denmark in 2000 and has since spread to communities around the world.

"The natural conversations that take place between books and readers can not only help challenge prejudices and stereotypes but also contribute more broadly to unjudging someone and creating greater cohesion across social, ethnic and religious divisions," according to the Richmond Public Library.

During the event, participants will browse a list of available "book titles" and select one to "borrow."

Each session features a one-on-one conversation, beginning with the human "book" introducing themselves, followed by the readers having the opportunity to ask questions.

The "books" are local volunteers interested in connecting and sharing their stories of overcoming personal hardship with others.

Since the program began, Richmond Public Library has hosted 105 reading sessions, with 23 "books" checked out by over 130 readers.

One returning volunteer said they loved "being a human book" because they can "choose what (they) want to tell (and) listeners choose who they will listen to."

"Then we both have some quiet time to talk about the story, about them, about me! Different every time, but always a great experience for all," she said.

Participants will be invited to borrow as many "books" as they like on a first-come, first-served basis with last call at 3:30 p.m.

Teens, adults and seniors are all encouraged to attend.
