A Richmond society that helps isolated and lonely seniors stay connected is celebrating its 25th anniversary this weekend.
Senior Link Society was founded in January 2000 to provide networking, resources, education and a supportive community for Richmond seniors. The goal is to help them stay independent — both physically and mentally.
Founder Patricia Cruz said many seniors don't have a friend, neighbour or someone in the family nearby who can listen to them on short notice.
"For these seniors, nobody pays attention to them, and some of them are quite lonely and isolated," said Cruz.
"Most of our activities in our communities are geared to help and support (them)."
Before starting Senior Link, Cruz noticed about 30 per cent of her clients from work "didn't have anyone," at least not nearby.
Some seniors had family or friends, but they lived in another city or country.
"No one would be able to come and rescue them if they had an emergency."
When the society first started, it was called Independent Senior, highlighting the elderly who could still take care of themselves. The name later changed to Senior Link.
Senior Link hosted programs such as community tea time events and trips to Victoria before the COVID-19 pandemic.
"There are many, many, many seniors in this community who have done amazing things when they were young, but nobody remembers them," said Cruz.
"We are actually trying to find those seniors who feel isolated — seniors who may not be welcomed to events because they are not well and cannot participate in community centres, but they have a wealth of knowledge, kindness and wonderful advice."
Cruz is proud of Senior Link for its 25 years in the community providing information, resources and a welcome space for seniors.
"This started out of passion and kindness from everybody who comes out to the board meetings."
Senior Link is made up of several board members, young and older and has many regular senior volunteers.
"If we didn't have this wonderful group of people who really care for others, Senior Link wouldn't exist right now.
"I hope that the community will continue to support Senior Link."
