An unveiling ceremony for two new street names honouring Const. Jimmy Ng, a Richmond RCMP officer who was killed in the line of duty, took place in Richmond on Thursday morning.
Cst. Jimmy Ng Road and Cst. Jimmy Ng Place are the two new streets in the Richmond Centre development project.
Ng, 32 at the time, was killed while working a night shift on Sept. 15, 2002, when a car ran a red light at No. 3 and Williams roads in a street race.
Numerous RCMP colleagues and troopmates of Ng, Commanding Officer of BC RCMP, Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, Richmond city councillors and dignitaries all attended the ceremony on April 10.
Retired Staff Sgt. Maj. John Buis, who was Ng's watch commander in Richmond, described Ng as a star, a willing listener, a gentleman and a talented police officer.
"Jimmy was dedicated to being thoughtful and helpful towards others, an amazing man, member, friend and son. Jimmy, we all live with the memory of your quick, beautiful smile," said Buis.
"The loss of someone so young and so promising affects all of us now and will continue to affect us for the rest of our lives."
Ng was not only a police officer, but a Richmond resident himself, explained Chief Supt. Dave Chauhan with the Richmond RCMP.
He grew up in Richmond and graduated from Richmond Secondary School. After he was sworn into the RCMP on March 18, 1996, he was posted in Duncan, B.C, for four years, before turning to Richmond.
Ng was known for his volunteer work as an auxiliary with the Coast Guard in Steveston as well.
Richmond RCMP said losing Ng as an officer "was sudden, heartbreaking and a loss that shook our entire policing family and this city," according to Chauhan.
"This initiative will ensure that Jimmy's legacy of service is honoured and remembered, not just by those that served alongside him but by the entire community he proudly called home," he said.
"We want to thank the City of Richmond for honouring Const. Ng and the ultimate sacrifice he made serving and protecting his community."
Brodie said the city is "deeply grateful" to Richmond RCMP officers working daily to keep the community safe.
"Today, we honour the memory of Const. Jimmy Ng, a dedicated officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our community," said Brodie.
"In naming these streets in his honour, we ensure his courage and commitment will never be forgotten."
