Richmond army cadets took part in their second community event this year, cleaning up garbage from their respective neighbourhoods

Richmond’s army cadets were out in force last weekend – cleaning up their respective neighbourhoods.

The cadets, from the 2381 “BCR (Irish Fusiliers)” Army Cadet Corps, collected the likes of cigarette butts, face masks, gloves and food packaging.

In total, the 20 cadets bagged 40 pounds of garbage from Richmond’s parks and streets – a significant amount, given the light weight of each individual item.

This was the corps’ second community action activity of the year.

“The scale of our project may be small, but it paves the way for greater things in the future” said Capt. Jeff Ng, Commanding Officer of 2381.

“What we are doing is connecting the dots between citizenship, volunteerism, and purpose-driven action in order to build a sense of ownership and responsibility in our cadets.”

The corps is a non-profit youth organization providing life skills and leadership training to Canadians ages 12-18.

The program is completely free and does not have any registration fees, admin fees, or dues.

Training takes place every Tuesday evening and will recommence in September, although registrations are accepted year-round.
