The annual Public Works Open House returns on Sept. 7.

Ever wonder how the city maintains its roads, water and sewer infrastructure and parks?

The free Richmond public works yard open house will be held at the City Operations Yard, 5599 Lynas Lane, on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event highlights the importance of public works in community life and recognizes the men and women who provide and maintain the infrastructure services known as public works.

Visitors can expect to see real-sized dump trucks, graders and excavators, activities like hands-on cement display, food trucks and live music and entertainment.

There will be information booths from various city services such as sewerage and drainage, engineering, survey and inspections, roads and constructions, environmental programs, and sustainability and parks operations.

Kids can receive a free food coupon and enter to win a grand prize by completing the kids' passport at the greeting station on the event day.

Limited parking will be available at the City Operations Yard, but there will be overflow parking at:

  • Austria Club - 5851 Westminster Hwy (5 minute walk)
  • Blair Elementary School - 6551 Lynas Lane (10 minute walk)
  • JN Burnett Secondary School - 5011 Granville Ave (15 minute walk)
  • Thompson Elementary School - 6211 Forsyth Crescent (18 minute walk)
  • McKay Elementary School - 7360 Lombard Road (21 minute walk)

Shuttles will also be continuously provided from 10:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. between the City’s Operations Yard and select overflow parking locations.

Wheel Watch will also offer free service to park bikes, wagons and strollers.
