Increased patrolling and enforcement of firework ban for Halloween, says Richmond RCMP

Richmond RCMP will increase police presence throughout the city to ensure public safety on Halloween.

In addition to frequent patrols, officers will also enforce the city’s zero tolerance for fireworks, according to an Oct. 28 release.

The RCMP is encouraging drivers to be extra cautious as the sidewalks fill with trick-or-treaters, especially during peak hours. Pedestrians could cross the street unexpectedly – drivers are reminded to reduce their speed in residential areas.

Parents and caregivers are being told to ensure children walk in groups and stay together if they are trick-or-treating without an adult, as well as travel with a phone. Children are reminded to stay on the sidewalk and cross at marked crosswalks.

As the fall weather sets in, costumes should be bright and visible in low-lighting conditions, according to police. Face paint is recommended rather than masks, which can limit visibility and safe movement. Long costumes shouldn’t pose a tripping or strangulation hazard.

Parents are urged to inspect all treats received by children. Richmond Mounties pointed to a 2022 incident involving a child consuming a candy containing THC. If anything seems off, parents should contact the police.

“We ask everyone to celebrate responsibly,” read Monday’s release. “Avoid unsafe behaviour, report any suspicious activities and look out for one another.”
