Richmond Sharing Farm to host virtual plant-based cooking webinar

Indian, Thai and sourdough-making workshops planned for June
Cooking class
Virtual cooking classes are being held by Richmond's Sharing Farm in June.

A Richmond non-profit is hoping to teach community members new cooking and baking recipes to help benefit the farm and the Richmond Food Bank during the pandemic.

The Sharing Farm, which provides fresh local produce to those in need, is hosting cooking classes to teach Richmondites how to make Thai and Indian cuisines as well as sourdough workshops in June.

Each workshop will be led by chefs and bakers, who are regular volunteers with The Sharing Farm, on Zoom.

The vegetarian Indian cuisine workshop will be led by Nav Sidhu on June 11 and the Thai cuisine workshop will be led Taniya Khanna on June 29. Both classes require a $5 participation fee for each household.

Meanwhile, Fionna Chong will be holding two sourdough workshops on June 19 and 26 for basic and intermediate sourdough bread making. These classes will require a $50 fee for each participant and will include some ingredients which can be picked-up at The Sharing Farm.

Sarah Drewery, executive director at The Sharing Farm, said the virtual cooking classes provide something for people to do during this time while the fund will help the farm keep running to donate fresh produce to those in need through the Richmond Food Bank.

“We’re lucky we get to do most of our activities outdoors where there’s lots of space compared to other non-profits, but we wanted to make sure to keep everyone connected despite the time we’re in,” said Drewery.

“In-person events such as our cooking classes have definitely been impacted, but hopefully the virtual classes will go well and community members can learn new recipes.”

Participants will also be given ingredient lists after they register
