Richmond student gets $28K scholarship for humanitarian work

The Burnett secondary is one of the recipients of this year's Terry Fox Humanitarian Award.

A Richmond student recently received a scholarship in recognition of her dedication to giving back to the community.

Burnett secondary's Isabella Bae is one of the recipients of the 2024 Terry Fox Humanitarian Award, a scholarship awarded to students who exemplify Terry Fox's humanitarian ideals.

Bae's passion for humanitarian causes spans from addressing food insecurity to inspiring young athletes. She was also inspired by her late aunt's battle with cancer to advocate for cancer patients.

She is a regular volunteer at the non-profit Food For Life, where she cooks and serves meals to underprivileged individuals and helps build a support system for those in need.

Bae has been a volleyball coach at Burnett secondary for the past three years and she also coaches cheerleading for children aged six to 12 years old.

"I have been a cheerleader for the last 12 years and being able to now give back to that community and shape these children into resilient and kindhearted individuals is truly special to me," she explained.

Also at school, Bae is active in various school clubs including the Women in Leadership Club, which is dedicated to empowering young female leaders. She is also a part of Burnett secondary's mentorship program where senior students help upcoming Grade 8 students transition into high school.

While it could be difficult to balance volunteering, coaching and sports all the while being a full-time student, Bae told the Richmond News being organized, setting reminders and writing down notes helps "immensely."

"Each of my volunteer initiatives are endeavours that are close to my heart and have deep meaning to me so I often volunteer to personally feel better and fulfilled as well," she added, explaining she also takes breaks when necessary to avoid burnout.

The young humanitarian will receive $28,000 to support her education at UBC, where she plans to study commerce and business.

This year's winners of the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award ranged from 16 to 22 years old, each having persevered through personal challenges. The scholars were honoured with at award ceremony on Parliament Hill on Monday, May 27.
