Steveston Community Park's playground will get a new makeover starting this summer.

A lighthouse tower with two big slides and a double zipline are among the features being added to the new Steveston Community Park playground.

The City of Richmond announced that construction of the new playground at No. 1 Road and Moncton Street will start this summer -- a date has yet to be determined -- and is expected to be completed by summer 2025.

The first playground was built in 1942 when the Steveston Community Society purchased the site and donated it to the city. In the 1970s, it was upgraded with the addition of an outdoor pool.

In the late 1980s to early 1990s, the playground was redeveloped and a trawler and a boat were added to create a fishing village theme, reflecting Steveston's fishing history.

More renovations were made to the playground in 2003, 2006 and 2014, including the addition of a waterpark, school-aged areas, and boardwalks.

The new designs for the playground incorporate both the historical and contemporary elements of Steveston Village. It will feature accessible equipment and surfacing to cater to a wider range of ages and abilities.

New features will include swings, multiple spring toys, custom salmon- and fishing boat-inspired climbers with interactive panels, a large sand play area with a water table and diggers and a new train planned for the playground.

During construction, the entire playground will be closed, but the water park and surrounding park areas will remain open.
