Video: Steveston taken over by the Wednesday Witches

If you witnessed a creepy cackle of witches dancing to a beat in Steveston yesterday, you weren’t seeing things. Don’t worry, though, the ghastly group weren’t casting any spells on the village.

If you witnessed a creepy cackle of witches dancing to a beat in Steveston yesterday, you weren’t seeing things.

Don’t worry, though, the ghastly group weren’t casting any spells on the village.

It was just a bit of fun organized by around 20 or so women - dubbed the “Wednesday Witches” for one week only - who gather every Wednesday in a Steveston ballpark to connect and keep each other’s spirits up (ha).

The ladies were, in fact, re-enacting a Facebook video they saw from Europe, which has a large troupe of dancing witches, moving in unison to a spooky beat.

One of the Wednesday Witches, Terry Tinkley, said the ladies used to get together to support local businesses, but have been meeting at the park since COVID to keep their distance.

“Most of us are wives of retired Richmond fire fighters but there are others as well. We all bring whatever we need for a nice comfy visit,” said Tinkley.

“It started with about 10 of us and now there’s close to 20 on the list. It’s all for camaraderie for each other. Not everyone knew each other when we started and when others are added, many are making new friends and finding connections. But what a great bunch of ladies.”

Tinkley said making the video with “a bunch of old birds dancing and being silly” was fun. There’s talk of a Christmas themed dance with elves and Santa.

“We’re just occupying our time and building on our friend bases.”
