Volunteers remove invasive blueberries, restore Richmond park habitat

88 bathtubs' worth of blueberry bushes were removed during the Earth Week activity.

More than 30 volunteers gathered at a Richmond park last week to celebrate Earth Week by restoring local habitat.

Led by the Lower Mainland Green Team (LMGT), community members removed 14 cubic metres of invasive blueberry from Richmond Nature Park on April 28 to improve the health of its bog habitat.

The volume of blueberry bushes removed is the equivalent of the volume of 88 bathtubs and 304 square metres of habitat was revitalized.

The event was part of the City of Richmond's Earth Week activities and welcomed 35 volunteers from Richmond, including the 28th Terra Nova Richmond Scouts, Delta, Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge.

It marks 11 years since the LMGT last removed blueberry bushes from the park in 2013 and builds upon ongoing work to restore the park by the city and Richmond Nature Park Society.
