Annual Steveston outdoor painting competition returns this week

150 artists are set to race against the clock to complete their paintings within three hours.

An annual timed outdoor painting competition challenging 150 artists of all ages and skill levels is returning to Steveston on Saturday and Sunday.

On July 27, 150 artists will set up along a three-kilometre painting circuit from London Farm to Garry Point Park to complete a painting within three hours in the Grand Prix of Art.

Community members are invited to cheer on their favourite artists by bike or on foot from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., when the artists return to the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site for judging.

An artisan market, live music, food trucks and interactive creative spaces will be available at Britannia Shipyards starting noon, and artists will get to enjoy a picnic at 1 p.m. while the judges deliberate.

Live music acts include Crabgrass, Blue Dirt Girl The Blue Hawks and Murphy and the Cats.

At 2:30 p.m., the Rotary Club of Richmond Sunrise will present cash and prizes worth more than $5,000 in total across categories such as Masters, Adult Open and Youth.

The works will then be displayed and put up for sale at the Penta Builders Group Exhibition in Seine Net Loft from 3 p.m. on July 27 until 4 p.m. on July 28.

Over the two-day period, community members and participating artists can also vote for their favourite works. The works with the most votes will be awarded before the closing ceremony at 3:30 p.m. on July 28,

The outdoor painting competition will take place on the Historic Steveston Waterfront Trail, while the festival will be held at the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site at 5180 Westwater Dr. For more information and a full schedule of events, visit grandprixofart.ca.
