A one-day free screening of three films is taking place in Richmond on April 16 to celebrate the world of cinema.
Cinevolution Media Arts is celebrating National Canadian Film Day at the Richmond Cultural Centre with three films that explore life across Earth and life forms.
This year's event asks the question "Who roams the Earth?"
“At its core, 'who roams the Earth' is a question not only about the ground beneath our feet,” said Yun-Jou Chang, executive director of Cinevolution.
Rather, it's also about Earth as a "celestial body" and we as human beings "on the mortal plane between heaven and hell."
"These films offer radically different ways of being, seeing and relating to the world.”
The program begins with Toronto International Film Festival award winner Sophie Deraspe's Bergers, which tells the story of a burnt-out Montreal resident who trades city life for shepherding in the French Alps.
Next is poet-filmmaker Alison McAlphine's Cielo, a meditative documentary set in the Atacama Desert where scientists, stargazers and local dreamers "speak with reverence about the night sky."
Cielo was named one of the best documentaries of 2018 by Esquire and The Guardian.
Lastly, In another place, not here, by Vancouver-based writer and scholar Yani Kong is a presentation of short films challenging viewers' way of seeing things.
"These films explore how we might enter into more effective combinations with/in the cosmos," said Kong.
Kong, known for her research on ecological esthetics and low-carbon filmmaking, will be at the event to introduce the program.
All screenings are free and will take place at the Richmond Cultural Centre's Performance Hall starting at 1 p.m. on April 16.
