Large, visible walls needed for murals in Richmond

The deadline to apply to have a mural is Sept. 23.

The city is looking for large, visible walls in Richmond that could host a mural.

The city is calling property owners, organizations, stratas and non-profit groups to take part in the city’s sixth annual Community Mural Program.

The program partners those offering walls to be painted with artists to create vibrant public murals.

Since the launch of the program, 28 murals have been painted around the city, for example, at Lord Byng elementary, at South Arm Outdoor Pool and at the Steveston harbour.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie said murals “add vibrancy to our public spaces, foster community identity and create civic pride.”

“Richmond’s Community Mural Program brings together artists, community groups, residents and local businesses to transform the places where we live, work and play into welcoming environments,” he said in a press release.

Chosen applicants will be notified in early October and city staff will then match them with a pre-qualified artist to create the mural.

Locations must be visually accessible to the general public, and meet a few additional requirements. Private, single-family properties are not eligible.

The deadline to apply is Sept. 23. Murals will be completed in 2025.
