Black History Month events takes place throughout the entire month of February in Richmond.
But the Richmond Public Library will have several events this Sunday (Feb. 9) to commemorate the 30th anniversary of this celebration of Black history and culture.
From 11 to noon, there will be a Canada Post Stamp Showcase whereby Canada Post will unveil its new stamp to celebrate Black History month. This is a drop-in event.
From noon to 1 p.m., a panel discussion will take place focusing on the 30th anniversary of Black History Month.
The panel will include Richmond school district superintendent Chris Usih, doctor of philosophy Leland Harper and inclusive leadership coach Shelley Vidal.

At 1 p.m, an hour-long soul music session will start with musician Checo Thomaso. This is a drop-in event. For more information, click here.
Then from 2 to 3 p.m., Ruby Diaz will present an author talk and Q&A about her book Searching for Serafim.
“Searching for Serafim, published this year by Arsenal Pulp Press, is a fascinating and personal exploration of one of Vancouver's most notable historical figures,” noted the library in a press release about the event.
Copies of the book will be for sale.
The author event is full, but anyone interested can join the waitlist.
Black History Month events throughout February
A month-long exhibit “Roots of Resilience Collection” by Tarcila Neves is at the Richmond Cultural Centre. It opened on Jan. 31 and runs until Feb. 28.
Furthermore, Neves and fellow artist Nickie Lewis will present “Creature of Nature: A Collaborative Sculpture Project Imagination” as part of the Children’s Arts Festival on Monday, Feb. 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Children are invited to join Neves and Lewis to decorate a leaf and add an artistic message about nature, the environment and sustainability to an animal sculpture made from natural materials.
"The sculpture will feature an augmented reality experience that combines art, technology and social change to create an engaging and interactive experience," according to the library.
On Tuesday, Feb. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m., the Richmond Public Library’s Film Club will present the movie Till!
“This film explores Mamie Till-Mobley’s relentless pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son Emmett Till, who was brutally lynched while visiting his cousins in Mississippi,” the library noted.
