Richmond's newest writer-in-residence will lead free events for writers of all levels starting in April.
Writer, editor and educator Taslim Jaffer has been named the city's 2025 writer-in-residence, where she will host in-person talks, workshops and drop-in sessions exploring the theme "Belonging in Canadian Literature" from April 5 to June 14.
There will also be an inter-generational story project for the community to take part in to encourage them to "see themselves in Canadian literature."
Richmond's 14th annual writer-in-residence program, in collaboration between the City of Richmond and the Richmond Public Library, will kick off on Saturday, April 5, at the Richmond Cultural Centre Annex.
From 1 to 2 p.m., the public can meet Jaffer and learn about the scheduled, free events for the next two months, including workshops for seniors and teens.
Jaffer grew up and started her family in Richmond. Now, she is a Surrey-based writer and instructor with experience and passion for creative non-fiction.
She is the winner of the 2022 Creative Nonfiction Collective/Humber Literary Review contest and the recipient of the 2021 Silver Canadian Online Publishing Award.
The Richmond writer-in-residence is currently working on an essay collection that traces her family's journey across five generations and three continents.
For more information on workshops, visit the city's writer-in-residence website.
