A 97-year-old man has become Richmond’s ninth vehicle-related fatality in 2013.

Jim Shu Sheng Wu was struck by a car around 3:30 p.m. on Friday as he crossed the road in the 8600 block of Lansdowne Road.

He was rushed to hospital and remained in a critical condition since Friday until succumbing to his injuries over the weekend.

Police say Wu was not in a designated crosswalk at the time of the incident.

The driver, a 20-year-old woman from Delta, remained at scene and was cooperative with police.  Neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash, according to Richmond RCMP.

Police are, however, are still seeking the public’s help with any additional witnesses asked to come forward.

Meanwhile, just after 6:30 p.m. on Monday, a man crossing McNeely Drive at No. 5 Road was struck by a vehicle turning left onto No. 5 Road.

He was found lying on the road, close to a marked and lit crosswalk, before being taken to hospital.

The extent of his injuries were not known as the News went to press, but the incident is still under investigation and Richmond RCMP said that speed and alcohol are not factors.

Local residents have been complaining for a long time about speeding drivers on that stretch of No. 5 Road.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the man remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

Both accidents come after a number of similar incidents recently and several police warnings for pedestrians and drivers to take extra care.
