A Richmond mystery: Cracking the case of the milk jugs with door knobs tied to them

It’s not exactly a case for the X-Files, but it has left one environmentally-conscious Richmond resident mystified. The woman, who asked not to be named, has been making rather bizarre discoveries in Garden City Park over the last few weeks.

It’s not exactly a case for the X-Files, but it has left one environmentally-conscious Richmond resident mystified.

The woman, who asked not to be named, has been making rather bizarre discoveries in Garden City Park over the last few weeks.

While walking her dog, instead of just spotting the park’s plethora of wildlife, she has been clocking empty, plastic milk jugs floating in the pond or hanging from trees.

And all of them, she says, are “elaborately” tied up and weighted with metal door knobs or parts from inside the device.

In the last two weeks, she’s fished seven such items out of the pond and taken several more down from the branches of nearby trees.

“It’s so, so strange,” she told the Richmond News.

“I first noticed them about a month ago…I’ve taken seven out of the pond so far and there’s another four still in there.

“I take the cap off the milk jug, untie the door knob and crumple the jug before it goes into recycling.

“But one day, I came back to see the same jug back in the pond. That was a little creepy. So, I’ve started taking the jugs home.”

The woman says she’s tempted to leave a note, asking why the person in question is doing it.

“But I’m wary about opening up communication,” she added.

And is the “mystery better than the answer?”

“It is a little disturbing to be honest.

“It’s a beautiful park that provides so much great habitat for wildlife, so it’s sad that someone would be going to this level.

“Maybe it’s a joke? Maybe I’m on some weird YouTube channel, where people guess how many milk jugs the lady is going to find today!”
