Red-light cameras at 140 high-crash intersections in B.C. are now live at all times — up from six hours per day to help reduce accidents.
B.C. Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth says there were 350,000 crashes in the province last year with about 60 per cent of those crashes occurring at intersections.
“For too long, cameras with a proven record of curbing red-light runners and the serious crashes they cause were not operating at full capacity,” Farnworth says in a news release.
The cameras can catch vehicles entering the intersection after the light turns red, leaving the registered owner responsible for the ticket, even if they were not driving the car at the time.
The vast majority of these cameras are located at intersections in the Lower Mainland with few on Vancouver Island and the Interior.
