Richmond Fire-Rescue was unable to determine a cause for the Richmond trestle bridge fire in June and the case has been closed.

A massive fire on June 20 tore through an empty loading bay and private dock, spreading to the historic Marpole CP Rail Bridge on River Drive.

Firefighters, Vancouver fire boats and Richmond RCMP were at the scene until the following morning battling the fire that sent heavy black clouds of smoke into the sky and closed the Oak Street Bridge for several hours.

Grant Wyenberg, assistant deputy chief at Richmond Fire-Rescue, said the site and structures have been turned back over to the rightful owners, and from the fire department's perspective the case has been closed.

"We were not able to safely assess the site and arrive at an evidence-supported cause," said Wyenberg.

"The fire, however, did provide (Richmond Fire-Rescue) with a unique opportunity to test and validate our ability to respond to and manage multi-agency and multi-jurisdictional events."
