Beijing’s world-renowned China Broadcasting Film Symphony Orchestra (CBFSO) will bring an evening of Hollywood’s greatest soundtracks to the Orpheum Theatre, Jan. 12.

Cinema in Concert marks the Vancouver debut of one of China’s finest symphony orchestras, known to sell out venues in more than 40 countries across five continents.

Led by conductor Pang Ka Pang, the 80-member CBFSO will perform live on stage while iconic film scenes play on the backdrop screen.  Soundtracks from Oscar-winning movies such as Braveheart, Casablanca, Jurassic World, Legends of the Fall and Pirates of the Caribbean, will mix with classics from the Chinese Movie Music Collection.

Cinco Vicki, Austria’s authoritative music critic, says of Pang, “His conducting is vivacious and enthusiastic, and his hands move very fast and with a uniquely elegant style.” Pang was also named one of the Top Ten Outstanding Young People of China.

For this premiere, “there are many tempo changes and different kinds of mood, and I need to change them very fast,” Pang said. “Also, each piece lasts only 10 to 15 minutes, but I need to tell people everything in the film during that time. So it’s a challenge!” Pang told the The Georgia Straight.
