Former Steveston-Richmond East MP said the Conservative Party of Canada is more united than before after removing Erin O'Toole as leader of the party.

"It's an irony. But in the so-called division, you will always find unity," said Kenny Chiu.

A decisive majority of the caucus voted to remove O'Toole in a secret ballot. Seventy three MPs voted in favour of replacing O'Toole, while 45 MPs endorse his leadership. O'Toole remains as MP for Durham, Ont.

Chiu told the Richmond News that this was the first time in Canadian history that a caucus fired their leader. They did so by deploying the powers granted by the Reform Act to remove an unpopular leader.

"I, personally, didn’t support the decision to change leaders, but I don't always get what I wish.

Moreover, it was a democratic process and "I believe this will bring about a more unified Conservative Party that will better represent the interests of Canadians," said Chiu, adding that he believes the caucus is ready to move on.

Some reports have asserted that O’Toole’s decision to show support for truckers who traveled across the country in protest of mandatory COVID-19 vaccines was a political gamble that lead to his ousting.

However, most point to the fact O'Toole appeared to flip on key issues and failed to win the last federal election for his firing.
